Pilgrims

October 12, 2007

Early Saturday morning, we left Los Angeles for our annual pilgrimage to Colorado. The color of the world is so much better at high altitude.

Although the weather was reported to be wet and possibly snowy, it was quite warm when we arrived. I instantly missed the moody thunderclouds, but the bright sky is nothing to dismiss when it's looming that large. Rain or not, next to the color, the sky is my favorite part of Colorado.

The first day was spent sleeping. Yes. I mean, literally sleeping. All day. Glorious. Like a cat. In a sunny corner of the house, I dozed in dreamless bliss until the sun moved out of the room.

The next day, we drove out to my dad's favorite fishing spot. The temperature dipped periously low for our sea-level bones, and we braved hypothermia to bring you this photo.

This is a slightly more accurate depiction of what clothing was required that day (four layers of clothes and frozen earlobes):

...Here's Kevin's opinion on the subject:

We definitely didn't hike as much this year as we did last year. The reasons were numerous, but they basically boiled down to the fact that we didn't wanna. We did, however, take a long drive through the beauty of fall. It was a little like "The Jungle Book Cruise" for lazy off-roaders.

We also grabbed a quick lunch on our dirt-road adventure (unfortunately, Kevin has an embarrassing case of Pringle Lips. Tragic, really.):

One of our views along the road:

At one point, our car was blocked by a small stampede of cows. Happy cows? Not from California. Happy cows come from Colorado, where they rule the road, and trot in carefree formation.

When we got back to the cottage, we did a whole lot of this:

Also, I perched myself in my dad's "fishing room", which is a nook in his home that is filled with nothing but antique fishing equipment. And a couch. (That's my shadowy head in the lower/right corner.)

At one point in our travels, my dad and Kevin dropped me off at the local spa, which is attached to a natural hot springs resort. This area of the town smells of sulfur, which becomes slightly pleasant if you associate it with relaxation and good health. We usually visit the springs at night, when we can marinate our bodies in the hot smelly water and simultaneously gaze at the stars and ponder the meaning of existence. But this year, we didn't. Instead, I got a facial. No pictures, though, cuz dudes, those facials take the photogenic right out of you for about 12 hours.

But because I can't help myself:
