The formula

April 11, 2007

In the world of creative projects, I've found that despite the romantic notion that all it takes is a fabulous idea an an ounce of "go-get-'em", the reality is quite different. Some people (a-hem.) make the reality a miserable mess because they get caught up in disappointment and fear. The reality of a project seldom reflects the perfect, fantastic scope of the original idea. Bummer.

However, I've come up with a handy-dandy roadmap for the realistic traveler. I should have it branded onto my forehead in reverse, so that when I look in a mirror I will remember it.

#1: GET AN IDEA

#2: Set some goals and BRAINSTORM.
Don't brainstorm too long because
that's called procrastination.
Don't brainstorm too short because
that's called lazy.

#3: Start WORKING
Working is not the same as playing.
Working is not the same as being miserable, either.

#4: DON'T STOP if you get discouraged
Everyone gets discouraged.
You're not special because you're overwhelmed.
It doesn't make you more of an artist.
It doesn't make you more interesting to be tortured.
It makes you lame.
Cuz everyone feels this way.

#5: Keep GOING
Find new inspiration
Change your mind
Try something new
But keep it moving

#6: FINISH
Pat yourself on the back
that you had the balls to follow through
even though things got messy.

#7: SHOW your idea to people.
Some people will love it.
Others won't.
MANY WON'T CARE AT ALL.
So what?

#8: ACCEPT that you are done.
You can't change it now. Let it lie.
If it makes you feel better, remember that
you are better off now than if you
never had the idea in the first place.
Eat a piece of cake.
Go to Disneyland.
Buy a tiara.

#9: DO IT ALL OVER AGAIN WITH A NEW IDEA.

This process never ends. Hopefully you'll go through it more gracefully each time. Enjoy.

#4: Definitely me right now.

I really could have used this list yesterday when I was finishing my portfolio.
As of 7:43am today, it was completed, labelled, coded, etc. I can now graduate (as long as I pass chemistry...)!!

You have no idea how much this helped me. I'd been working in this essay about the movie "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Basically, what you needed to do was relate the movie to the concept of kitsch and then link that whole idea with human rights.

You know what part of your list totally got me? "Don't brainstorm too long because that's called procrastination". Anyway, it is finished and I think I managed to do a good job. Thank you!
