Aftermath

February 16, 2007

After my very awful, no-good, dirty-rotten day on Wednesday, it's amazing how wonderful the rest of the week has been. The project that I was crunching because my computer was down was surprisingly completed yesterday. I will deliver it in its final stage about 5 days early! How'd that happen? I honestly don't know.

Also, last night Kevin and I sat down and talked about the jury duty situation. Even though he's losing weeks worth of paychecks and has to resign from the exciting project with Lucas, he feels himself letting go of selfish importance and releasing himself into the service of our community. Surprisingly, it's starting to feel good to him. Go figure!

My mom is doing equally well. She was a little shaken-up yesterday, but she's just so incredibly grateful that the accident wasn't worse. How did she escape the situation so unscathed? I have no idea.

Normally, I would need a vacation after a week like this one...but that's not how I feel right now. I feel energized and...O-P-T-I-M-I-S-T-I-C...

I hope everyone reading this has as great of a weekend as I think I'm about to have.

xo

I'm glad to hear things are looking up after that disasterous day. Remaining optimistic is definitely the key! :)

Terami, I'm pretty confident that it's against the law to fire someone for serving on jury duty. They don't have to pay you, but they can't fire or demote you. Your state law may say something different...and I guess if Kevin's considered an independent contractor it may be different.

"What happens to my job obligations?"
Your employer must allow you time off to serve on a jury. That is the law. The California Labor Code prevents any employer from firing or harassing an employee who is summoned for jury service. School employees and students are protected as well in different parts of the law. However, you must let your employer know well in advance, as soon as you receive your summons. You should contact the court if you have a problem with your employer. Remember that you can postpone jury service to a more convenient time. Read your summons carefully or contact your local jury office to find out how to request a postponement.

Robert - Thank you for the info and your concern. Since Kevin's freelance, his job status is subject to different guidelines. He's still employed - but he had to resign on this particular project. Ergh. xo T.

You can file for deferment. Apparently it's really common and easy.
