"Proper unicorns fall in love with willowy virginal princesses. Moonshine had fallen in love with Maggie Brown, an unkempt, unruly hearthwitch...With her minstrel friend Colin Songsmith, Maggie and Moonshine set off on a perilous quest to stop the evil sorcerer Fearchar from capturing the kingdom...But now Colin and his beloved Maggie were getting awfully close, and Moonshine couldn't remember anything in the Unicorn Creed to cover that." -- from the cover of The Unicorn Creed, my most favorite book as a young teen.
The Unicorn Creed has been out of print since I first read it. Initially checked out from the library on a whim, I gobbled up the story about 10 times over the two-week lending period. Like a good girl, I returned the book on time. But then, it mysteriously disappeared from library records. (Someone after me probably checked it out and never returned it.) This, followed by a several-year hunt for a copy. I even asked my book-collector friend in New York (hi Noah!) to help me locate a copy. But it was a dead-end.
Last week I visited Barnes and Noble online for something or other and decided to search for it in their catalogue. Many, MANY copies were listed. So I spent a whopping $1.65 for my precious first edition paperback and the story comes to an end. The Unicorn Creed is sitting on my desk right now.
This is bliss.
