Superpowers

January 02, 2005

I realized this morning that I now have a superpower. It's a baby superpower. I haven't stopped speeding trains or flown to Japan to stop the next Godzilla from destroying towns. But nevertheless, in the the small container of my daily life, it's a good one.

Somewhere in the loooong and sometimes irritating hours producing this album, my ears have learned to hear music! Where I used to listen to a song and hear only melody and lyric, I now hear production, rhythm, space, tone, and balance. I'm still developing the power. I'm not going to go insure my new golden ears for $1 million or anything. But if NOTHING else comes of this album, I'm so grateful for the ability to appreciate music more than I have before. I can now join the ranks of my insane friends who listen to to a song and wistfully re-produce it to perfection in their heads...lamenting that the cymbals are on the 4 and not the 1...that the violin was chosen over the cello...or that the vocal reverb is too strong. Freaks!

Scoff if you like. But it feels like a superpower to me.
