Slippers for Toes and Music for Ears

November 08, 2004

A chatty day. Two entries. I guess I didn't spill it all earlier, so here I am again.

This is where things stand, album-wise. I have one...ONE song left to finish. A few weeks ago I had three songs left - the three most snotty and difficult of all. One was Astronaut. This song might well be the bane of the album. After FINALLY writing what might be perceived as a lovely single, I went through tortured dances around how it was too much of a pop song and not at all the sound I wanted to chase. So it's official now. All three of the songs on (3 of X) have become relegated to nothing more than an experiment of the rejected kind. Nice to know ya, you songs that I have snubbed.

So in order to keep balance on the album, I needed to replace Astronaut with another song...a potential single of the non-pop variety. Within an afternoon and some change, I had Little Light. It was written and recorded within 4 days.

So then I decided the formula just might work for The Beast Inside, which was much more of a story-song, but also more of a sweet, simple pop song. And we must AWAY with pop songs!

Sure enough, the song was replaced in fast form with a new one called Drifting.

Now, on to this third. I am FORCING myself to produce it. It's not particularly pop, but it's in a major key and it's mood is as dark and bitter as lemon taffy. Meaning, not at all.

So this time I am forcing myself to produce it. To take the challenge of a sweet song and roughouse with its sound.

So I'm sitting here, listening to Vespertine, noting each shade of light she dulls with darkness, and each shadow she brightens with a spark. It's overcast outside. I'm still in slippers. I'm lissssssstening. In my in-between moments, I'm editing photos I took over Halloween to send to my family. I'm overwhelming myself with other conscious thoughts so that I can push my production worries to the sub part of my brain where they just might bloom.

Distract, distract, distract.
